Marc Thiessen

Marc Thiessen is a former White House chief speechwriter and Fox News contributor who appears several times a week on The Story with Martha McCallum, Special Report with Bret Baier and other Fox programs. He is a columnist at the Washington Post, where he writes twice a week on foreign and domestic policy. In 2018, the Post syndicated his column nationally for the first time and it was picked up by 178 newspapers — the most successful launch of a syndicated column in Washington Post history.

Marc served as a member of the White House senior staff under President George W. Bush, where he was the lead writer on two State of the Union addresses and worked closely with President Bush on hundreds of speeches. Before that, Marc served as chief speechwriter to Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld. He was in the Pentagon when it was hit on September 11, 2001, and traveled 250,000 miles around the world with Rumsfeld, including multiple visits to Afghanistan and Iraq. He saw the war on terror up close, from the Oval Office to the planning rooms of the Pentagon and the major battlefronts of the Middle East. His inside account of the CIA’s terrorist interrogation program, “Courting Disaster,” was a top-ten New York Times bestseller. In it, he provides an unprecedented, behind-the-scenes look at the CIA’s “black sites,” and evidence to prove that CIA interrogations were directly responsible for foiling multiple follow on attacks after 9/11.

Prior to joining the Bush Administration, Marc served as spokesman and senior policy advisor to Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Jesse Helms (R-NC) from 1995-2001. He is a resident fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, where he studies American presidential leadership, intelligence and counterterrorism. He is a graduate of Vassar College, and completed additional post-graduate studies at the Naval War College. He lives in Alexandria, Virginia, with his wife, Pamela, who works on Capitol Hill. They have four children.
